New Year's
How it may come up:
- New Year’s is a great excuse to party
- I love watching the ball drop in Times Square at midnight on New Year’s.
- I don’t make New Year’s resolutions; it’s you idiots that need to change not me.
Overview:
New Year’s (and New Year’s Eve) is one of the few federal holidays on the American calendar that has no religious associations and is celebrated almost universally around the globe. A popular New Year’s tradition is to make resolutions. A resolution is generally a goal that someone will set for him or herself that they intend to carry out over the course of the next year – weight loss and church attendance are popular varieties. Other popular resolutions include drinking less, working harder, or spending more time with one’s family.
The most noteworthy New Years Eve in recent memory was when the calendars changed from the year 1999 to 2000; you may remember the hullabaloo that surrounded our entrance into Y2K. Many people around the world were afraid that computers would not be able to handle this switch and basically fry themselves. Other people, who could be characterized as crazies, prophesied the end of the world, walking around with signs and spewing their cultish fervor on anyone who would listen. Although the incident was 10 years ago and the details are a bit foggy, it seems that much of the potential problem was overstated. We seem have to pulled through.
Talk About It:
- I would stay off the roads on New Year’s eve, there are a ton of drunks driving around
- It’s a great American tradition to kiss someone at midnight, so don’t be shy, grab the closest girl and pucker up
- If you plan on going to Times Square to watch the ball drop, make sure to get there real early, and prepare for a magical, if freezing cold evening
How I Really Feel:
I love New Year’s Eve. Not that I need another excuse to drink, but this is one of the few nights of the year where my drinking isn’t frowned upon. I also love going out to see the fireworks displays being put on by everyone from professionals to high school students.
