Green Tips
How It May Come Up:
- How can I live green?
- What is the best green website or organization with lifestyle tips?
- What companies promote green living?
Overview:
As awareness of the threat of global warming has grown, more and more people have turned to a green lifestyle. Green living can be exercised in a variety of ways including energy conservation, food and water limitations, and recycling. There are many ways to protect the environment and one’s own health and some green tips are more obvious than others. In terms of energy conservation it is an obvious advantage to turn off any running lights and energy saving bulbs are growing in popularity. These bulbs not only save money in the long run, but can also use up to 5 times less wattage to light a room.
A major part of global warming comes from carbon emissions, which in addition to coming from factories, come from the cars we drive. As the number of vehicles a family owns has increased over the years this problem has become increasingly serious. Not everyone can afford eco-friendly hybrid cars, but there are simple and cost effective solutions as well, like carpooling to work or school, taking public transportation, or even riding a bike.
Commercial farmers have also made an effort to cut back on pesticide use, and the average individual can as well. Many pesticides used to protect gardens are actually doing more harm to the environment than the user knows. Since some plants will naturally repel insects, these toxins can be replaced with careful companion planting.
Talk About It:
- Use natural cleaning products made of biodegradable ingredients rather than the alternatives made from harmful chemicals
- Read digital magazines in order to reduce paper usage and conserve trees
- Use filtered water or reusable water bottles instead of bottled water which results in more than 38 billion plastic bottles collecting in landfills every year
How I Really Feel:
The green initiative has grown immensely in recent years, but is costly in the short term. Whether it is new appliances or vehicles, the green initiative scares some people away due to family budgets. However, with a little research people can live greener at little to no cost.
